Get a DukeCard

See the DukeCard home page for DukeCard office locations and hours. Download the University DukeCard Request form here. Print and complete the form then bring it to the DukeCard Office to obtain your card.

Students:

  • Go to My First DukeCard to submit your photo online.
  • Most students receive their first DukeCards during orientation.
  • You must present a government-issued picture ID (driver's license, passport, military ID, etc.) to receive your first DukeCard
  • There is no fee for your first Contactless with Magnetic stripe DukeCard. You may pay the fee for a replacement card with cash, check, debit, or FLEX, or charge it to your Bursar account.
  • Contactless card with Magnetic stripe
    • $10 fee for replacement card when turning in damaged card
    • $15 fee for replacement card for lost/stolen card
  • Proximity plus Contactless with Magnetic stripe card
    • $10 fee for first Proximity plus Contactless with Magnetic stripe card
    • $10 fee for replacement card when turning in damaged card
    • $15 fee for replacement card for lost/stolen card

University and health system faculty and staff

 Visit the Medical Center Engineering and Operations site for information on obtaining a DukeCard and gaining access to Medical Center facilities.  Download the Medical Center Card Request form here.  Print the form and complete your portion before taking it to your HR representative to fill out the remainder.  Bring the completed form to the DukeCard Office to obtain your card.

  • Permanent, full- and part-time employees are eligible. University faculty and staff obtain their cards from the university DukeCard office at 012 Telcom Building (lower level rear entrance)  (map)  (walking directions) 
  • Health system faculty and staff obtain their cards through the medical center DukeCard office (see contact information).
  • To receive your DukeCard, you must present:
    • a government-issued picture ID (driver's license, passport, military ID, etc.)
    • a valid Duke Unique ID Number (see your department HR representative for more information.)
    • a letter from the hiring department requesting an ID and explaining access required (and listing Duke fund code, if the department is paying for the first card)
  • Your hiring department often pays for your first faculty/staff DukeCard. 
  • Contactless with Magnetic stripe card
    • $10 fee for initial card
    • $10 fee for replacement cards when turning in damaged card
    • $15 fee for replacement cards for lost/stolen card
  • Proximity plus Contactless with Magnetic stripe card (used by some University and most Health System employees)
    • $10 fee for initial card
    • $10 fee for replacement card when turning in damaged card
    • $15 fee for replacement card for lost/stolen cards
  • iClass Proximity with Magstripe card (limited and restricted issuance card)
    • $15 fee for initial card
    • $15 fee for replacement card when turning in damaged card
    • $20 fee for replacement card for lost/stolen card
  • You may pay the fee for a replacement card with cash, check, debit card or FLEX.

Alumni

  • The Alumni Association issues ID cards to alumni. See the Alumni site for more information. 

Visiting scholars, students and other sponsored guests

  • You must be sponsored by a school or department.
  • To receive your DukeCard, you must present:
    • a government-issued picture ID (driver's license, passport, military ID, etc.)
    • a valid Duke Unique ID Number (see your department HR representative for more information.)
    • a letter from the sponsoring department requesting an ID
  • Your hiring department may pay for your first DukeCard. 
  • Magnetic stripe cards:
    • $5 initial fee for magnetic-stripe card
    • $5 fee for replacement cards when turning in damaged card
    • $10 fee for replacement card for lost/stolen card
  • Contactless with Magnetic stripe card
    • $10 initial fee for magnetic-stripe card
    • $10 fee for replacement cards when turning in damaged card
    • $15 fee for replacement card for lost/stolen card
  • Proximity plus Contactless with Magnetic stripe card
    • $10 fee for initial card

Contractors

  • Cards for contractors are authorized by:
  • Once you have authorization, visit a DukeCard office and present:
    • a government-issued picture ID (driver's license, passport, military ID, etc.)
    • a valid Duke Unique ID Number, obtained through FMD
    • a letter from the appropriate office requesting an ID
  • Contractors pay between $5 and $20, depending on the type of card required
  • Magnetic stripe card
    • $5 fee for initial card
    • $5 fee for replacement cards when turning in damaged card
    • $10 fee for replacement cards for lost/stolen card
  • Contactless with Magnetic stripe card
    • $10 fee for initial card
    • $10 fee for replacement cards when turning in damaged card
    • $15 fee for replacement cards for lost/stolen card
  • Proximity plus Contactless with Magnetic stripe card
    • $10 fee for initial card
    • $10 fee for replacement card when turning in damaged card
    • $15 fee for replacement card for lost/stolen card

Spouses

  • Duke Employees and Students:
    • Duke employees and students must sponsor a spouse at the OIT Guest Account website.
    • When that process has been completed and a Duke Unique ID has been issued, the spouse should visit the DukeCard office to obtain the spouse DukeCard
    • The spouse must present a government-issued picture ID (driver's license, passport, military ID, etc.)
  • Magnetic Stripe card
    • $5 initial fee for Magnetic stripe card
    • $5 fee for replacement cards when turning in the damaged card
    • $10 fee for replacement cards for lost/stolen card
  • The fee may be paid with cash, check, debit card or FLEX. 

Children of Duke faculty and staff who have family recreation center privileges

  • Duke employees and students must sponsor their children at the OIT Guest Account website.
  • Children 10 to 18 years old may obtain a DukeCard only for individual admission to recreation centers.
    • Children under 10 years old are not eligible to obtain a DukeCard for any reason.
  • Children 16 to 18 years of age must show a valid, government-issued ID.
  • Magnetic Strip cards:
    • $5 initial fee for Magentic stripe card
    • $5 fee for replacement card when damaged card is turned in
    • $10 fee for replacement card for lost/stolen card
  • You may pay the fee for your card with cash, check, debit card or FLEX. 

Summer program attendees

Temporary staff

  • All Duke Temporary Services and Kelly Temporary Services employees must request cards through the medical center DukeCard office (see contact information).
  • Departmental temporary employees for the University may be obtained at the university DukeCard office at 012 Telcom Building (lower level rear entrance)  (map)  (walking directions) 

Volunteers

  • University volunteer DukeCard are obtained at the university DukeCard office at 012 Telcom Building (lower level rear entrance)  (map)  (walking directions) 
  • Health system volunteer DukeCards are obtained at the medical center DukeCard office (see contact information).
